PAPER K
PROPOSAL FOR EXTRA CANOE LAKE CLEANING FROM IWC.
BACKGROUND FROM LEE MATTHEWS - IWC Parks Officer
The canoe lake cleaning was previously undertaken by Highways but for some
reason this service was not transferred across into the new PFI contract.
For a period of time the service continued but was stopped in the spring of 2019.
Following complaints, the parks department covered a weekly Summer clean once a
week over the summer period (this was not budgeted for).
We have obtained and circulated a twice a week quote from Island Roads, but we
only have budget (internal and welcome back fund for a once a week service).
FIGURES
The Island Roads quote totalled £6,730.50 plus VAT for cleaning the area twice a
week for a total of 15 weeks.
The IWC Parks Department have budget for 50% of that - £3,365.25 plus VAT.
Therefore, RTC are being asked to partner with IWC to pay for a second clean
of the area by Island Roads at a cost of £3,365.25 plus VAT for this year.
TO CONSIDER
2021 is a crucial year for visitors to Ryde. We expect that there will be
exceptional numbers of visitors over the summer period.
The ongoing Southern Water works at Appley are already going to present a
negative impact on the visitor experience.
Having a messy, dirty, slippery, and potentially unsafe walking area around
the canoe lake would certainly add to that negative impact.
It has been stated in numerous meetings with Waterside Trust that once a
week cleaning of the area will not be enough - there are simply too many
geese there creating too much mess.
