Project name
Appley Beach Murals
Description of Project
Laura Hathaway, who previously worked on the Sea Eagle Columbine Mural, proposes creating similar wildlife-themed murals for the seafront shelters in Appley. These murals would feature local wildlife and be visible from various vantage points. The shelters are currently in poor condition and the works proposed would enhance the area. Key points of the project include:
Team and Costs: Laura Hathaway and Alice Malia have established the mural costs.
Contractors: Two local Ryde contractors have been approached for quotes on repair and preparation work.
Approvals: Kristian Horlock, IWC Parks Officer, has approved the project, and Cllr Jenna Sabine will support and sign off the funding application.
Funding: The project will seek funding from ACE, with contributions from IWC and RTC as match funding.
Collaborations: The project has support from ARC, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, and local marine photographer.
Community Engagement: Plans include engaging local schools with educational materials and events.
Ryde Arts Trail: The new murals will extend the existing trail.
Potential Collaborations: There are opportunities to collaborate with Appley Tower for a light projection event and with the Solent Seascape Project.
Land Ownership and relevant consents
The shelters are under the responsibility of Isle of Wight Council parks team, who have been consulted and support the project.
Capital Cost of Project (to be approximated or accompanied by supporting Quotations)

Ongoing Costs for 5 Year Period
Zero cost to Ryde Town Council.
Anti-Graffiti paint will be used as a topcoat for these murals. This will provide an additional layer of protection for the murals against degradation with the coastal environment, and also enable any dirt and spot cleaning to be carried out without damaging the artwork.
Cleaning and maintenance will be carried out by IWC parks team.
Proposed Start and Finish Date of Project
Spring 2025
Aesthetic Improvement: Transforming the dilapidated shelters with vibrant murals will enhance the area, making it more inviting for residents and visitors alike.
Cultural Enrichment: By featuring local wildlife and extending the Ryde Arts Trail, the murals will celebrate the unique natural heritage of the Appley area, fostering a sense of pride and connection to the local environment.
Educational Opportunities: Engaging local schools with educational materials and events will provide valuable learning experiences about local wildlife and conservation efforts, promoting environmental awareness among young people.
Community Engagement: The project involves collaboration with various local organizations and individuals, including artists, wildlife trusts, and photographers. This fosters a sense of community and shared purpose, encouraging local participation and support.
Economic Benefits: An enhanced seafront can attract more visitors, boosting local tourism and benefiting nearby businesses. The project also creates job opportunities for artists and contractors involved in the mural creation and shelter repairs.
Social Cohesion: Public art projects like this can bring people together, creating shared spaces that encourage social interaction and community bonding. Events and activities related to the murals can further strengthen community ties.
Overall, this project aims to revitalize the seafront, celebrate local wildlife, and engage the community in meaningful ways, enhancing both the physical and social landscape of Appley.
