The project was shortlisted in the highly competitive ‘Motability Best Day Out’ category, placing it alongside some of the UK’s most recognised venues and events, including Alexandra Palace (winner), Glastonbury Festival and Birmingham’s Bullring Shopping Centre among many others.
The Beach Accessibility provision, which enables people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the coast, has been widely praised for breaking down barriers and creating more inclusive seaside experiences. Through specialist equipment, as well as the support of trained staff and volunteers, the initiative ensures the simple pleasure of visiting the beach is open to everyone.
The project was also Highly Commended, a strong result in a highly competitive national category. While the top prize went elsewhere on the night, this distinction places the initiative firmly among the standout entries and reflects the quality and impact of the work delivered. It provides a real sense of achievement, alongside encouragement to continue building on this success.
Following the announcement, Ryde Mayor Diana Conyers said: “This is an incredible achievement for a small town like Ryde. I would like to thank the team for all the effort they have put into this project.”
“We are absolutely delighted to have been acknowledged in such a way,” said Annette Steed, Projects Officer at Ryde Town Council. “To be recognised in the same category as nationally renowned destinations and events is something we are incredibly proud of. It reflects the hard work, passion and commitment that has gone into making our beaches more accessible for all.”
The nomination highlights the growing importance of inclusive tourism and further strengthens the Isle of Wight’s reputation as a welcoming destination for visitors with additional needs.
The team remains committed to developing and expanding the service, ensuring even more people can experience the freedom, wellbeing and enjoyment that comes from spending time by the sea.
