The reopening was celebrated by having a small event at the Millennium Green attended by Trustees, Ryde Town Councillors and Guardians of the Green. It was a wonderful morning with special thanks given to Pam and John Simm for founding and more than 20 years managing the green. Thanks to them, and a small band of committed volunteers, countless residents have been able to enjoy the benefit of this tranquil community space, as has the wildlife.
Millennium Green is one of the key open spaces for community use in Ryde and is a true local heaven for wildlife and wildflowers. The Chair of the Charity, Ian Jefferies, was proud to announce that Play Lane Millennium Green has been presented with the prestigious, nationally-recognised Green Flag Award.
Chair of Play Lane Millennium Green Said:
“We’d like to thank Ryde Town Council for the grant enabling us to re-build the entrance to this special place. We are also honoured to be presented with the Green Flag Award and over the years this space has been transformed into a beautiful mixed woodland space, including a butterfly meadow, a pond, and some limestone paths to provide easy access for the local community.
The work that we do at Play Lane Millennium Green could not be done without the wonderful volunteers, guardians and everyone who donates to the charity, meaning we can keep this beautiful community space open for all to enjoy.”
The Green is situated near the bottom of Play Lane but can also be accessed via the footpath over Dame Anthony’s Common which starts in Newnham Road near Brickfields, or by the southerly footpath at the bottom of Hillrise Avenue, Binstead.
Cllr Richard May Said:
“Ryde Town Council encourages everyone to come and use Millennium Green – it would be great to see some new faces if you have not been before. It is perfect for easily accessible walks, with plenty of nature to spot along the way. I congratulate the trustees – they’ve persevered for over 20 years, creating a beautiful space and showing how areas can be changed through rewilding. Play Lane Millennium Green is open to the public all year round and everybody is welcome, even dogs!”
