– Improvements at Pig Leg Lane

Treading the boards at Pig Leg Lane

Visitors to the Gift to Nature reserve at Pig Leg Lane will have seen rangers and volunteers hard at work this autumn creating a brand new boardwalk alongside the Monktonmead Brook.

The nature reserve is managed by the charity and works are supported by Ryde Town Council. This is the second phase of activity to make Pig Leg Lane easier to get around, and the boardwalk has been funded by Tesco Bags of Help: Tesco’s local community grant scheme where the money raised by the sale of carrier bags is being used to fund community projects.

This beautiful area of peaceful countryside south of Ryde is a great place for a walk, but in the past some areas have been too wet or too overgrown for easy access. Now, after two years of work, there is a good walking route around most of the nature reserve. Visitors can come down Weeks Road, along Rosemary Lane, or follow the footpath along the end of Quarry Road. The new boardwalk is easy to find, it’s down by the pedestrian railway crossing that goes to Oakfield.
