– Ryde Carnival in bid for Tesco bag fund.

Ryde Carnival Association are bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.
Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of up to £4,000, up to £2,000 and £1,000 raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores awarded to local community projects.
Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.
Ryde Carnival Association is one of the groups on the shortlist.
Ryde Carnival is 130 years old this year and is the oldest carnival in the country! It has survived for so many years because it plays an important role in the community memory of the Island – a large proportion of those living on the Island have grown up either performing in or watching carnivals.

“This year we want to create our biggest and best Carnival processions yet – celebrating Carnivals past and inspiring Carnivals of the future. The cash we receive from Tescos will enable us to encourage more performing artists into the parades and to provide some free Carnival workshops over the summer to help people with costume making and ideas. With our community’s support everyone can enjoy a spectacular celebration of Ryde Carnival this summer.” Liz Allen: Chair Ryde Carnival Association

Voting is open in all Tesco stores throughout March and April. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.
