Because of the current works taking place at Appley, one of the generators failed at the Seaview end which resulted in wastewater entering the surface drains at Appley.
To ensure the safety of the public an exclusion zone has been set up around the immediate areas. Southern Water removed the sand and cleaned the areas affected on and around the lower walk.
The incident took place at low tide and because the contaminated sand has been removed, the bathing water would not have been impacted. However, the Environment Agency have been on site and will liaise with the Isle of Wight Council and Southern Water if they have any concerns. The generator is now working, and the system is back up and running.
